These Specialised Short Term Courses can be conducted at DIIS campus at Gurgaon as well as at the location of the organisation subject to number of candidates taking up the course.

Candidates are imparted an NTU-recognised and acknowledged certificate, after successful completion of these courses.

Short Courses

Anti-Fraud and Transparency Policy Making (1 Week)

Because transparency is a necessary factor to promote and continuity in any organisation, this course will be of benefit to professionals in a variety of capacities. This includes managers who oversee the administrative processes in their organisations, project managers, officers responsible for the management of contracts and procurement, policy-makers and advisors. This course will also be of interest to financial investigators and members of law enforcement agencies and those involved in compliance, due diligence and prevention activity.

Courtroom Skills (1 to 2 Weeks)

The witness box is a lonely place. Many witnesses or indeed experts feel they are on trial, standing in the dock rather than giving independent testimony to assist the court. Often these people are unfamiliar with this environment as few cases go to full trial, but a poor performance can undermine confidence and credibility.

This Courtroom Skills training is an intensive one/two week, highly practical and experimental training course. This is no mere lecture with hints and tips. An experienced lawyer, who is a trained trainer, will examine the theory, practice and procedure of giving evidence, and demystifying the process. This course will be run in partnership with Nottingham Trent University whose facilities are set up for such activity. An experienced Magistrate will be presiding over the proceedings to bring a sense of realism to this training.

Creating & Managing a Compliance Team (1 to 2 Weeks)

This course identifies the principles essential to ensuring effective compliance within an organisation. It provides delegates with the hands-on, practical knowledge essential to introduce and implement a suitably trained compliance team. Core topics, such as fraud prevention and response planning, are scoped and developed within practical workplace scenarios to test the delegate’s practical approach to problem solving and removal of possible fraud.

Cyber Crime (1 Week)

This course profiles the modern way to fight cyber crime and the ever present need to have talented and diligent employees equipped with smart and reliable information technology tools. It is seen today that there is a requirement to remain vigilant of an enemy that is global in reach, technologically mature, and communication savvy. In the wake of catastrophic events like September 11th and the ever-evolving national security and criminal threats, there are lessons to be learned, changes to be made, courses to correct and new problems to solve. To keep pace with these events this course will develop skills to keep ahead of the criminal fraternity.

Corruption Management in the Workplace (1 to 2 Weeks)

This course looks at the implications of corruption upon government, public and private sector organisations and the individuals within those organisations. There is a strong emphasis on how to combat corruption, with the use of practical workshops to re-enforce identified learning outcomes, as well as covering topics such as risk assessment, prevention and investigation issues, evidence management and the use of financial investigation.

This course is aimed at those decision-makers, managers and all members of public and private sector organisations, who require an understanding of corruption and its ramifications in the workplace. The course is also a must for members of law enforcement agencies and those directly involved within the procurement management arena, as well as project managers, contract managers, policy makers and advisors.

Evidence Gathering & Interviewing Skills (1 or 2 week – Two level course)

This course is designed at two levels. Firstly, covering general awareness issues to interviewing and its associated skills required to undertake these function. Secondly, a more in-depth understanding of the subject for the working practitioner. It is suitable for internal and external auditors, forensic accountants, and financial investigators, members of the police service and other law enforcement agencies and those involved in compliance due diligence and crime prevention activities.

Forensic Auditing and Accounting for Business and Government (1 to 2 Weeks)

This module provides development for internal auditors and financial investigators to help them to effectively perform their tasks and set up a system to detect and combat White Collar Crime. This will integrate practical knowledge with current auditing techniques to facilitate the prevention, detection, investigation, reporting and prosecution of economic crime. It will make all managers aware of their responsibilities in this area.

Fraud Management for the Practitioner (1 to 2 Weeks)

This course looks will introduce the skills necessary to develop policies and utilise internal procedures necessary for the investigation of fraud, corruption and the overseeing of individual propriety. It will develop knowledge and understanding of a range of resources and approaches, which underpin the requirements for due diligence and fraud prevention activity. The aim of this course is to develop peoples’ skills and competencies to undertake the management of fraud investigations in accordance with current law and regulatory requirements. It will combine technical knowledge with practical application, best practice methodology and prevention techniques.

Fraud and Corruption Awareness – Senior Financial Managers (1 to 2 Weeks)

The purpose of this module is to develop an understanding of how organisational processes can be developed to benefit departmental and corporate functions. These processes will enable organisations to be more efficient and productive. By implementing these principles and concepts of transparency within their respective organisations it will contribute towards securing the trust of the public and respective stakeholders.

Fraud and Corruption Awareness – Junior & Middle Managers (1 to 2 Weeks)

This course is designed to increase the awareness of those in managerial positions to the potential for fraud and corruption to occur in their workplace. It is especially useful to managers and project managers responsible for budgets, contracts or procurement as well as those managing compliance teams managing the risk factor.

General Awareness in Law and Compliance (1 Week)

This course will be suitable for internal and external auditors, forensic accountants, financial investigators, members of the police service and other law enforcement agencies. This course will also be ideal for middle and senior managers who have ownership of the responsibility of overseeing the audit process as it relates to the detection and prevention of economic crime.

Global Economic Crime (1 to 2 Weeks)

This course addresses the global problem of economic crime, money laundering and transnational fraud, because without such awareness it would be easy to lose hope. It is hard enough to ensure effective law enforcement in domestic jurisdiction. It seems almost impossible to expect law enforcement agencies and state machinery to succeed when the challenge comes from outside the country. Lawyers and practitioners usually think in jurisdictional terms. Therefore this course covers methods that tackle the manageable problems that are local but at the same time to allow practitioners to develop their skills to confront the elusive criminal who manipulates cyberspace or who pulls levers from an every shifting overseas base.

Interviewing Vulnerable & Intimidated Witnesses (1 to 2 Weeks)

This course is ideal for Police officers, local government officers and all types of investigators. For example, local government officers would greatly benefit from this type of awareness training. It will assist practitioner investigators to identify and profile witnesses early and develop individual interviewing skills.

Money Laundering – Levels 1 & 2 (1 to 2 Weeks)

This course is aimed at all managers and financial investigators to increase their awareness and knowledge of how criminal proceeds are obtained and disseminated both locally and internationally. It also explores how national and international cooperation is necessary; to ensure both criminal and preventative measures are adequately implemented, to combat the professional money launderer. The course highlights the concept of financial investigation and the investigation of money laundering.

Sound Risk Management – Corporate Governance & Control (1 to 2 Weeks)

In an increasingly complex world there are now far greater opportunities for organised criminal organisations to launder their proceeds of crime both nationally and globally. This module provides an understanding of how criminal proceeds are obtained and disseminated both locally and internationally and how national and international cooperation is necessary to ensure both criminal and preventative measures are adequately implemented to combat the professional money launderer.

Aviation

Aviation Security Management

This five-day course is intended to attract managers and executives who have existing senior leadership responsibilities in the aviation and aviation security sectors, or who are likely to move into these roles in the near future. The course examines the core principles of security and applies them to the aviation context at the local, national and global levels. Integrated security risk management models are considered and applied to all aspects of the modern airport environment at landside, airside, in terminal buildings and to the supply chain. Methods of recruitment, selection and continuous professional development of aviation security personnel are explored, with a detailed focus on competency, performance and quality management techniques.

Aviation Security Risk and Crisis Management

This five-day course is intended to attract managers and executives who have existing senior leadership responsibilities in the aviation and aviation security sectors, or who are likely to move into these roles in the near future. Aviation security continues to be an area of global concern. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) global Risk Context Statement provides a high-level description of the global aviation security risk picture. The statement presents high-level, strategic statements to help guide Member States in taking a risk-based approach to maintaining and extending their civil aviation security programmes. This course considers the practical application of the Risk Context Statement at the regional, country and airport levels, using a risk-based approach to all aspects of security, including acts of terrorism. In particular, it examines the detail of the guidance and provides methods for providing risk mitigation and countermeasures to identified threats. It further examines best-practice methods, and international standards, for managing any crisis that may arise directly or indirectly from the realisation of such risks, including the sensitive handling of people most directly affected.

Intelligence

Advanced Open Source Intelligence

Students will be taught how to use interdisciplinary approaches to juxtapose data streams in forming intelligence knowledge. Advanced techniques in using the Internet as a search tool within a legal framework support students in fulfilling intelligence requirements through the use of deep-rooted search strings, triangulation and the assessment of data tools available. A tribunal / court room scenario challenges the understanding, methodology and reporting capability of students to ensure confidence and competence. Students will be required to engage primarily in on-line learning. They will be required to identify, where tools that are blunt in isolation, when used conjointly, provide an intelligence picture. The intelligence gained can often be coupled with other knowledge in the corporate system. For example, students will be expected to engage in critical analysis of an individual’s ‘lifestyle’, crime trends, nature of on-line activities of organised crime groups, etc.

Delivery will be by a building block approach/ classroom presentation followed by coaching/practical workplace further learning.

A series of consolidation exercises and finally structured practical (assessment?) exercises.

    • Day 3 – Theory presentation, additional complex foot surveillance situations (shopping malls, markets, large open spaces, bridges, alleyways etc), followed by practical exercise
    • Day 4 – Theory presentation, intelligence/evidence gathering including close proximity to target surveillance. Coaching/practical intelligence gathering exercises
    • Day 5 – Consolidation exercise covering all aspects taught to date. (Potential assessment outcome?)

Internet Investigations

Open Source Investigation Training (OSIT)

This course is aimed at enabling all investigators to have the ability to safely and lawfully gather information and intelligence from the wealth of resources available on the internet. The course is highly interactive and hands on, with the candidates being tasked with carrying out an investigation on the internet to obtain key information and test the skills that they learnt throughout the course. The course is tailored to the exact requirements of the organisation to ensure that the content is current, relevant and crucially, engaging to the end users.

Entry Requirements

This course is available at three levels of complexity

  • An introduction to OSIT,
  • OSIT Intermediate level and
  • An advanced OSIT course (available to Law Enforcement only)

We are advocates of delivering a quality of training that enables students to be able to leave the course and apply their new-found skills and knowledge in practical, high pressure operational environments rather than just understand the theory. We therefore emphasise the need to work with the individuals/organisation prior to the course delivery to ensure that the content of the course is tailored to their exact requirements. Please note this course will be taught in English.

Maritime

Maritime Security – Controlling the Commons

A significant proportion of world trade and energy supplies moves by ship. The oceans are thus one of the most critical facilitators of global prosperity. Maritime security is the use of national and international maritime power to ensure this movement is maintained. But doing so is becoming increasingly challenging. This course introduces students to one of the fundamental strategic security dilemmas of the 21st century – keeping the seas both free and secure.

Duration and Campus

The course is 4 days in length and can be delivered in any campus environment with access to electronic projection facilities.

Entry Requirements

This course is lecture based with programmed periods for question and answer and plenary sessions. Some overnight reading will be required. It has been designed to particularly appeal to policy and law makers wishing to understand the geopolitical and geostrategic importance of the high seas from a practical perspective.

Electronic Warfare

The providers are able to offer (subject to export approval) a full-suite of training programmes in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW) including Communications Intelligence (COMINT), Spectrum Management and managing the equipment and assets use in the defeat of the Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RCIED) using Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) and Counter RCIED Electronic Warfare (CREW). The providers will tailor programmes to the clients’ requirements and further information can be provided upon request. Electronic Warfare (EW) and Communications Intelligence (COMINT)

Used effectively, EW is a force multiplier that provides real-time actionable intelligence to assist a commander’s decision-making process in any field of operations. There is a growing demand for appropriately trained EW specialists who understand the radio frequency (RF) spectrum and can exploit both simple and complex signalling methods to win the electronic battle. Risk Management

Crisis, Risk and Incident Management

This is a two-day course, delivered by qualified experts who have worldwide experience of dealing with a variety of incidents at all levels. Practical exercises and theory cover everything from training and forming your own Incident Management Team to crisis communications and you will learn how to measure and manage the impacts of incidents, whether operational or financial.

Examines the principles of effective communication, including audiences, media channels (traditional and social media), content, delivery and control. The course also provides practical application of message preparation, live media interviews to camera, press conference hosting and presentation techniques.

The training is aimed at anyone who has a role in responding to an incident and is a member of an incident management team. It is not just aimed at ‘administration staff’ although it is important that they attend. The training is aimed at senior managers, advisors or specialists who may have to justify the advice they have given and for more junior staff who may have to account for their actions.

Managing Protest and Disorder

This 10 day training course is designed for police officers that are likely to have Tactical or Strategic responsibility for managing public events, public protest and public disorder.

Involvement in the management of protest and disorder is a rapidly developing professional field. It not only affects public sector policing agencies, but also has an impact on security companies, corporations and organisations in the private sector, as well as potential protest groups. Public disorder attracts wide interest from the media, and is often in the public eye. When planned or spontaneous disorder occurs it affects all elements of society. “The challenge remains for operational police commanders to make critical decisions within fast moving and volatile situations. We need to support those who take on such decisions in order to keep the public safe”.

This course will assist delegates to manage their individual and organisational risk through a programme of study, which will take the delegate through the development of public management responses to the threat of terrorism during public protest and disorder. The overall course aim is to facilitate and develop delegate learning, and work to widen delegate knowledge of managing public order, protest and disorder.

To support this aim, the broad objectives are to familiarise delegates with the fundamentals of UK public order policing command and response methodology, and to provide the knowledge to manage a broad range of public order threats, both planned and spontaneously emerging. The course content will develop delegates’ understanding of an evidence based approach to policing public order, the course will also develop an understanding of the available responses to identified threats, of both a human and physical nature, through participation in lectures, seminars, workshops, case studies and interactive table top exercises.

Railways

The Management and Command of Serious Rail Passenger Transport Emergencies

This 5-day course, which can be run at either intermediate or higher levels (roughly equivalent to Strategic and Tactical tiers), introduces inter-agency delegates to methods of handling passenger transport emergencies from both operator and responder perspectives, and includes detailed examination of the increasingly critical importance surrounding ‘decision making’. The course employs a range of teaching formats and draws upon the latest research on the management of these incidents. Extensive use is made of case studies with an emphasis on learning the lessons of operators and responders throughout the world. During the course delegates will be encouraged to take an active part in structured discussions and exercises and to develop a professional action plan to consolidate their learning and to transfer this to their workplace. The course content will focus on railway, light railway and metro systems but will also draw on experience in other land transport modes and lessons from other sectors.

Introduction to Securing and Policing Railway, Light Railway and Metro Systems

This 3-day course examines security and policing in the unique environments that are underground, at grade and elevated railway, light railway and metro systems, together with their associated Critical Infrastructure (CI). Inter-agency delegates will examine the different models that operate around the world and will have an opportunity to consider policing and security challenges within different legal and cultural frameworks. Extensive use will be made of case studies and delegates will be encouraged to bring their own knowledge and experience into the classroom. This course is highly relevant to operators with security responsibilities and law enforcement agencies with unique and co-terminal jurisdiction over rail systems. This course also serves as a starting point for those charged with identifying and assessing associated risks, designing policing and security models for existing, new and extended systems.

Planning for Emergencies & Major Events and Building Resilience in Heavy Rail, Light Railway and Metro Systems

This 3-day course looks at the principles of emergency and event planning and management in the context of heavy rail, light railway and metro systems, and covers the whole cycle of activities associated with this responsibility. Aimed at planners and senior managers the course will allow delegates to consider best practice in emergency planning in the railway environment. It will consider the relevance of statutory requirements and the importance of engagement and joint working with other agencies. Transport systems are frequently criticised for their lack of resilience and business continuity and this course will explore the non-engineering principles of building resilience and contingencies into a rail transport operation.

Railway Suicide: An Introduction

The use of the railway as a suicide method has been a problem since the first networks were established in the first half of the nineteenth century. The wider impact of these individual tragedies is examined. This 3-day course draws on work designed to improve the response to these incidents and the restoration of railway services, as well as ultimately contributing to the prevention of railway suicides. Delegates will have the opportunity to examine current examples of best practice in the management of this sad, emotional, and disruptive subject area of railway operations. Of interest to operators and law enforcement agencies this course will consider the legal, operating and social impacts of this form of suicide, and will assist delegates in managing this issue in the real world.

Introduction to Developing Personnel Resilience

This course is designed to inform individuals on how to consider ways and means to develop the resilience of either themselves, or their personnel. This is specifically pertinent when preparing personnel to respond to critical incidents. The course is designed as an introduction to personnel resilience to develop a person’s knowledge, understanding and skills. It is therefore particularly suited to be delivered as a standalone course to workforce personnel, or as part of a wider managerial development course for persons in junior and middle manager roles. The course explores the social misuse of alcohol and the implication of this onto the individual and the team. It also explores the issues behind the creation of workplace stress and the impact it can have on performance and personally. The course is based around the use of multi-media, discussions and practical events during the two-day period to create an interactive learning environment which is delegate centric. This course explores the following topics:

Critical Incident training for Schools and Universities

Occasionally, an unexpected event does occur which can affect a school or universities reputation, its pupils, staff and parents, for example a coach crash, natural disaster, act of terrorism or criminality, an allegation of impropriety or a financial scandal, etc. Even a minor emergency can have a massive impact on the reputation of an institution and potentially threaten its future existence. Maintaining day-to-day operations whilst dealing with the after-effects of an incident can be challenging. Dealing compassionately with concerned parents, students and staff, or an emergency relocation can be just a few of the problems faced – possibly while handling media briefings. All this can prove to be immensely damaging to reputation if handled by untrained staff in the absence of a structured tested response. Developing the capability in your people to access skills when under pressure is not always straightforward. We have created a joint approach that works in a unique, secure and discreet way to enable a truly immersive preparatory experience.

In addition to a full audit review of existing plans, and the preparation of new critical incident plans, we offer a unique, immersive, training programme using scenario exercises to ensure that both pupils and staff have an unforgettable learning experience. The simulations yield risk-critical tools vital for an effective response to emergency situations. Understanding vulnerabilities and capabilities in the plan is a vital part of surviving. We ensure the Institution maintains its duty of care to pupils and staff, protecting its brand and reputation by being better trained and prepared. Our exercises provide a valuable tool for identifying any shortcomings in the plan and providing a way of quickly resourcing, rehearsing and training for a more effective response.

Urban Search & Rescue (USAR): First Responder

First responders are most effective in areas where they are the only available immediate resource to respond to vulnerable populations in disaster prone countries. Their role is to:

  • Assess the nature and scale of the incident
  • Provide initial rescue from collapsed buildings
  • Provide information to local decision makers
  • Request appropriate support resources to successfully complete rescue

The USAR first responder package consists of 4 elements:

  1. Specification of equipment such as basic tools, clothing and protective equipment. The equipment is stored in a standard steel ISO container and allows the first responders easy access to equipment
  2. Standard operating procedures which can be adapted to local needs
  3. Training programme which provides First Responders with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to be able to respond to an emergency
  4. Access to the INSARAG First Responders Global Network online

All our trainers are USAR specialists with an unparalleled level of operational expertise gained over many years in many different environments. They are highly experienced and used to working with teams from all over the world. The course consists of both theoretical and practical modules and is delivered over 5 days. The course is designed for local responders that will be involved in assisting vulnerable populations in an emergency. Typically, these first responders are members of the local emergency services, for example local police, medical staff or fire fighters or part of local government organisations who are responsible for emergency management or response and members of volunteer, charity or community groups.

Counter Terrorism: prevention, enforcement and protection

The first course enables an understanding of strategic and tactical contexts of countering terrorism; the 4P’s and associated framework will develop understanding of law enforcement / policing roles alongside other agencies to prevent would-be terrorist activities and attacking individuals/networks through intelligence, enforcement and protective strategies. This initial programme can also be extended to provide guidance and on instruction on the creation, development and delivery of an effective Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU). A further programme develops an approach to addressing aspects of the criminal investigation of terrorist activity including; intelligence handling, scene/forensic management and recovery including aspects of digital forensics, etc.

Criminal and Terrorist Siege – Developing a Police Response

Sieges inevitably attract national and international media coverage, particularly if the incident occurs in a high profile location. A siege, if protracted, can also have considerable financial implications to the business of an area. The resulting ballistic exclusion zone, necessarily imposed to maintain public safety, is likely to severely restrict the running of day-to-day public life.

We offer different study formats for this course. The first option is for a 5-day face-to-face course. The second option is a distance-learning course. The two can be combined in order to receive accreditation, either for the purposes of CPD or as part of an MSc in Managing Protest and Disorder.

The first response to a siege is considered to be of critical importance in minimising its impact, containing the threat and establishing the ‘battle rhythm’. The short, 5-day course aims to analyse that response, examine the command responsibilities, and evaluate all the response options available to the command, in order to resolve the incident with the minimum of risk to the public and minimum disruption to the business in the area.

The distance-learning units aim to broadly examine and analyse the response to siege, the interaction and conflicting needs of specialist units, the influence imposed on the event command and intended outcome through political, media and community pressures. The course will examine the theoretical perspectives that underpin the practical strategy and responses.

Protest and Terrorism

8 or 16 weeks, divided into 4×2 or 4×4 week units

Professional Focus: Police Officers or security staff employed in management and response to public crown management, public events, public order and disorder in a strategic or tactical command role or as a senior operational responder.

This course aims to provide the students with a broad understanding of the police response to protest and terrorism, and a developed understanding of the police capacity and capability to respond viewed against the accepted academic theories. The response will also be viewed in circumstances where there is a change in the threat or risk that suggests the presence of a terrorist threat during the management of protest or disorder. The course will examine whether the profile of the generic uniform police responder, who deploys at protest and disorder, is fit for purpose, or the rise in threat and risk requires a more specialised response.

Identifying and Managing Vulnerability & Radicalisation

The issue of radicalisation and incitement to support or commit acts of terrorism has increased exponentially with the rise of Islamic State and its derivatives, e.g. IS, ISIL, ISIS, Daesh, etc. They have demonstrated a capability far exceeding that of Al Queda for radicalisation without the same support cell network. The current push, following significant resources being tasked to stop travel to IS held Syria has been to use social media and messaging to encourage individuals to act in their home countries.

The United Kingdom has recognised the increasing threat of “home grown” terrorists and authored a national counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST. The strategy is comprised of four specific pillars, known as the four Ps:

  1. Pursue – the surveillance and detection by police and security services
  2. Prepare – Planning to mitigate and manage the impact of a terrorist incident
  3. Protect – Improving the resilience of the built infrastructure to terrorist attack
  4. Prevent – The identification of those vulnerable to radicalisation and prevention of them supporting or comping terrorist acts

This course, whilst giving an overview of the holistic nature of the planning and response to combat terrorism will focus on what is known in the UK as Prevent. The prevention of people becoming terrorists or supporting acts of terrorism.
